Royal Palms Gowanus Shuffleboard Club
Its been a pretty sad winter, lots if snow for New York which means a lot less exploring. This weekend nature gave us a reprieve and we had lovely weather with dry sidewalks and warm temperatures. Since warm weather lifts the spirits my friends and I decided that a little neighborhood excursion to the new Royal Palms Shuffleboard Club in the Gowanus was in order. It was opening weekend so there was already a line when we got there around 8:30pm. The owner came up to apologize for the wait they unfortunately had to follow fire safety codes and keep capacity at 300. The space itself is enormous but laws are laws, so we waited about half an hour. We got it and decided to divide and conquer, two of us would scavenge for seats and the rest hit the food truck. Yeah that's right, a food truck, the club owners were clever enough to have a perfect drive in spot for a different food truck to serve their delightful snacks each week. This weekend was the Red Hook Lobster Pound Truck. My friend and I were lucky to score seats for the 5 of us. Beers and food in hand we watched all the newbie shuffleboard players. Just an FYI, shuffleboard is usually played by folks over 70 in Florida, so its interesting that the youngsters are diggin' it, I think the kitch value is attractive. The space is wonderful, they need to work on their beer selection, this is Brooklyn there's no excuse for a poor selection, its a fun atmosphere.
Getting there: 514 Union Street, Brooklyn R train to Union St
