Olek and Parra at Jonathan Levine Gallery

I have a lot of catching up to do, my computer's hard drive decided to die two weeks ago and it took a week to get it repaired and then another week to get all my software and files back up. But everything is alright now and I will resume the regular scheduled program.
Let's start with this amazing show I saw yesterday. Olek is wonderful crochet artists, her work steps away from the granny chic we are all use to and goes in a hole other direction. Its fun and feels like a Fruits photo spread.
"Olek (born 5 April 1978,full name Agata Oleksiak, and known professionally as Crocheted Olek) is a Polish-born artist living in the US. Her works include sculptures, installations such as crocheted bicycles, inflatables, and fiber art. Her best known piece is a false apartment in which the contents, including the residents, were covered in crocheting. It was featured in various international media outlets. The work generally includes members of the public or the media, crocheted directly into the suit without traditional fasteners."

Crochet Aviator Hat

I whipped this aviator hat up this week based on one of my favorite hats I bought in Japan at CA4LA. The original hat is crocheted from faux fur yarn, which is impossible to find in the States, we only have "fun" fur which is hideous. I made mine from a cute curly yarn (100% acrylic) on the body and the poms, then the little hearts on the ear flaps are a blend of 50% merino/25% alpaca/25% acrylic. I was thinking of adding this to my store, of course I will make more than one, but what do you think should I sell them? (BTW, pics are terrible because its been rainy)

Granny Pillow

High Hopes pillow If you saw yesterday's post I recently acquired a bunch of vintage doilies from Turkey so I set out to make myself a mini pillow for my sewing chair (said chair not pictured because the studio is in an upheaval at the moment). With my Dottie Angel book in hand for inspiration and conjured this little friend for my back in no time. I love Tif's inspirational quotes so I borrowed one to add to my sewing pillow. This pillow now sits in my creative chair in my very messy studio. Thanks Tif for your inspiration. The pic doesn't do it justice, the pom poms are super fun bright colors, it's rainy day and I'm not set up for a good pic, but you get the idea.

Doily City

This weekend I finally received my ebay purchase of a huge lot of perfectly perfect vintage doilies from Turkey. I'm not a regular ebay shopper but for vintage and lots it's probably the best bargains you'll find. I have many plans for my new besties. They will be added to new projects all jotted in my little sketchbook. It makes me sad that these were a little old lady's hard work and then they were cast off into the world but I feel like they'll have a good home with me and my ideas. The whole shebang included 25 doilies wrapped in a pretty embroidered hanky and small table cloth, all vintage and handmade. Here are few pics. vintage crochet doilies vintage crochet doilies vintage crochet doilies vintage crochet doilies vintage crochet doilies vintage crochet doilies vintage crochet doilies vintage crochet doilies vintage crochet doilies vintage crochet doilies vintage crochet doilies vintage crochet doilies vintage crochet doilies

Francie Pants!

I have two lovely little dogs, Francie a little long-hair chi and Budda a coton de tulear. Recently we, Debra & I, put on our creative caps on and made Francie inspired art & craft. D, made the cutest Victorian portrait of lil' Miss Francie, she can be a difficult model too insisting she get paid in lots of chicken, her price is high, hehehe. I've been working on a little crochet seat cushion/pad for the lil' Miss since she likes to leave fur all over my mid-century, electric blue, chair. Head on over to D's blog for some fantastic art.

Sunset Park Crafty Night

My friend Nancy started up again her weekly crafting night at her apartment in Sunset Park, every one works on a project, it doesn't have to be just knitting or crochet. Nancy's husband is working on a beautiful blanket for his sister's wedding, it's all white, with two trees intertwining branches to represent two lives coming together. The trees are made from cables, pretty amazing, I'm sorry I didn't photograph I'll try to get a pic next week.

Okonomiyaki crochet hat!

Just finished this little cap last night. I used a star crochet pattern from one of the Japanese pattern books I purchased in Tokyo on my last trip in March. I added a fun pom as embellishment that I found the inspiration in one of the recent stationery/other cute goods Japanese books. It's a pretty yellow superwash wool and I was lucky enough to have all these cute trims in yellows in my stash! I added a little pop of pink! I should actually say that I used the repeat pattern but not the hat style, the actual hat they have is a slouchy hat.
